good! morning hands

a series of morning warm-up exercises for the even the groggiest designer

originally designed for the 8 a.m. fundamentals of graphic design course at the University of Houston

There are four main types of exercise throughout the series:

  1. Basic hand skills like measuring and drawing precise shapes

  2. Puzzles that emphasize both color theory and x-acto cutting skills

  3. Grid assignments that ask students to look carefully at the colors and content of printed matter and manipulate it within regular grids

  4. Collection assignments for which students must study their environment and select materials for use in a composition that shows mastery of Gestalt principles

These exercises are intended to supplement foundational study of composition and introduce careful observation of the environment (both in the studio and outdoors) into the design process.
